Introduction

Your fridge is an essential appliance in your home, but it can also be a breeding ground for bacteria and odours if it's not cleaned regularly. Deep cleaning your fridge is an important task that can help keep your food fresh and your kitchen healthy. In this blog post, we'll show you how to deep clean your fridge in easy steps.

The difference between a ordinary fridge clean and a deep fridge clean

Keeping your fridge clean and bacteria-free is important, and there are differences between a regular fridge clean and a deep fridge clean. Regular cleaning should be done every few days, with once per week being sufficient. The frequency of cleaning is crucial to prevent odours and bacteria build-up.

A regular clean involves simple maintenance to keep the fridge clean, making it easier to maintain in the long run. This includes disinfecting the door handle, wiping down surfaces, rotating food, and placing paper towels underneath items likely to drip.

A few times each year, homeowners should perform a deep clean on their fridges. When doing this, you'll want to ensure the fridge is unplugged before you begin. It's also a smart idea to put a towel down on the floor to protect it from any spills.

Step 1: Empty Your Fridge

The first step to deep clean your fridge is to empty it out completely. Take out all the food, including condiments, jars, and bottles. This will give you an opportunity to check expiration dates and throw away any expired food. If you have a cooler, you can transfer your food there while you clean your fridge.

Step 2: Remove Shelves and Drawers

Once your fridge is empty, remove all the shelves and drawers. You can wash them in the sink with hot soapy water, and dry them with a clean towel. If you have any stains on the shelves or drawers, you can use a solution of baking soda and water to remove them.

Step 3: Clean the Interior of Your Fridge

Now it's time to clean the interior of your fridge. Mix equal parts of water and vinegar in a spray bottle, and use it to spray the interior of your fridge. Wipe it down with a clean cloth, making sure to get into all the corners and crevices. You can also use a toothbrush or a soft-bristled brush to clean hard-to-reach areas.

Step 4: Clean the Door Seals

The door seals of your fridge can accumulate dirt and grime over time. Use a toothbrush and some warm soapy water to clean the door seals thoroughly. This will help prevent any air leaks and keep your fridge running efficiently.

Step 5: Clean the Exterior of Your Fridge

Don't forget to clean the exterior of your fridge too. Use a soft cloth and some warm soapy water to wipe down the exterior of your fridge. If you have any stainless steel appliances, you can use a specific cleaner to avoid damaging the surface.

Carefully pull the fridge away from the wall and vacuum the coils at the back to remove all of the dust. Carefully remove the grate or kickplate at the bottom of the fridge as well, and vacuum there. If your fridge has a drip pan, carefully remove this and clean it with the same method as the internal shelves or drawers.

Step 6: Put Everything Back

Once you have finished cleaning your fridge, it's time to put everything back. Make sure to organize your food in a way that makes sense to you. Place the items that expire first at the front, and group similar items together.

Common mistakes not to make when cleaning a fridge

Although cleaning the fridge may seem like an easy task, there are some common mistakes that should be avoided.

One mistake is using hot water to clean the fridge's interior, which can increase the appliance's internal temperature and make it work harder to bring it back down, leading to a delay in returning perishable items.

Cleaning the fridge seals is also critical as they tend to be the dirtiest part and can improve the fridge's efficiency and prolong the life of your food.

Failing to clean up spills immediately can cause excess moisture, damage the appliance, and pose a health risk.

Additionally, not drying the fridge's interior after cleaning can create a moist environment that is conducive to bacterial and mould growth. To prevent contamination, make sure to thoroughly dry every part of the fridge before returning your food.

Conclusion

Deep cleaning your fridge can seem like a daunting task, but it's essential to keep your food fresh and your kitchen healthy. By following these easy steps, you can have a clean and organized fridge in no time. Remember to clean your fridge regularly, at least every three months, to prevent bacteria and odors from accumulating.
