How To Help Your Children Follow A Healthy Lifestyle

As a parent, you’ll teach your children hundreds of lessons throughout their lives. For example, you’ll go from helping them take their first steps to teaching them how to iron their own clothes for their first day of work. However, one of the most crucial lessons that you can share with them when they are young is the importance of following a healthy lifestyle.

Nevertheless, this can also be one of the more challenging life lessons to impart to your children. For example, you may struggle to get them excited about healthy eating if their favourite foods are the kind served at your local fast food restaurant. However, that does not mean it's impossible.

With that in mind, here are some top tips that you can follow to help your children follow a healthy lifestyle!

Make exercise fun.

A healthy lifestyle is about more than eating well - it's about living well. This means that you should also participate in regular exercise, especially when you are younger. As a result, you should help them find a fitness activity they truly love, from dance to swimming classes, as they’re more likely to stick to something they enjoy than something they feel forced to do.

Encourage them to try new foods.

Following a healthy diet as a family does not mean you have to give up everything aside from vegetables. In fact, it's best to opt for a diet that is as varied as possible. However, as up to 50 percent of children are reported as picky eaters by their parents or caregivers, diversifying their diet may seem like an impossible task. In any case, it's best to start small. Introduce a few new ingredients or foods each week. Don’t force them to eat something they enjoy, instead, seek out an alternative or a way to make it more appealing.

Spend more time outdoors.

Spending more time outdoors is another excellent way to follow a healthy lifestyle as a family. For example, a weekly walk in the countryside can help you to stay active, “maintain a healthy weight, keep your muscles and bones healthy and increase your cardiovascular fitness.” It can also better your mental health, helping your children find ways to keep stress and anxiety at bay. Furthermore, it also offers you the chance to spend some quality time together away from phone screens.

Ensure they get enough sleep.

While children will always beg to stay up that little bit later past their bedtime, ensuring they get enough sleep will also help them to follow a healthy lifestyle. This is because it encourages them to stick to a routine. Furthermore, “studies have shown that kids who regularly get an adequate amount of sleep have improved attention, behaviour, learning memory and overall mental and physical health. Not getting enough sleep can lead to high blood pressure, obesity and even depression.”

Fortunately, there are many ways you can help your kids get more sleep - from following a strict nighttime routine to limiting screen time before bed.
