How to Incorporate More Affluence into Your Wardrobe

The old money aesthetic is having a serious moment, and for good reason. It’s all about that timeless sophistication, the kind that whispers rather than shouts. Sure, there’s quiet luxury, which is technically a part of it as well, but people are just sick of the whole “in-your-face” fast fashion that just doesn’t want to seem to die.

This style isn't about flashing logos or chasing the latest trends; it's about curating a wardrobe that exudes quiet confidence and effortless elegance. So, how do you incorporate more of that old money vibe into your wardrobe without looking like you've raided your grandma's closet (or looks like you’re wearing a costume)?

Well, there are a few things that you can easily incorporate into your capsule wardrobe that can help you look fabulous and remain timeless!

Invest in Quality Over Quantity

Alright, so let’s start with the basics. The old-money aesthetic is all about quality. While sure, there are plenty of fast fashion companies trying to sell cheap tweed skirts, you’re going to want to skip out on those. So, instead of splurging on multiple fast fashion items that will barely survive a season, focus on key pieces that will stand the test of time. For example, a well-made cashmere jumper, a silk blouse that feels like butter, a mens wool gilet for the man in your life (or for you if you like the oversized look), or even some tailored trousers that fit like a glove (slouchy trousers just won’t work)—these are the pieces that not only last but actually get better with age.

Neutral Tones Are Your Best Friend

Here’s the thing with the old money aesthetic: it’s rooted in simplicity. That means neutral tones are your best friend. So, this is about the classics—cream, beige, navy, and charcoal. These colours are like the little black dress in your wardrobe. So, if you already have a capsule wardrobe, then you might already have these colors, so it’s about getting high-quality clothes in these colours (so you can replace the not-as-nice clothes in your wardrobe).

Embrace Timeless Silhouettes

Forget about chasing the latest runway trends. At the moment, silhouettes and body sizes are trending. Basically, things that shouldn’t be trending are! But for the most part, the old money aesthetic is about timeless silhouettes that flatter without being fussy. Just think about it: there are the A-line skirts, tailored blazers, and straight-leg trousers—these are the kinds of pieces that scream sophistication without trying too hard.

The Power of Subtle Accessories

When it comes to accessories, you’re going to have to remember that less is more. The old-money look isn’t about being decked out in bling; it’s about subtle elegance. Basically, it’s about keeping it classy, not flashy.

Incorporate Luxurious Fabrics

Fabrics were mentioned earlier because more fast-fashion companies are using luxurious fabrics and incorporating them into their clothes. Now, in theory, this sounds great because luxurious fabrics are always eco-friendly like cashmere, silk, wool, linen, and cotton.

But most fast-fashion brands use low-quality fabrics or a small percentage so they can market them. Now, when it comes to high-quality luxury fabrics, they can immediately elevate your outfit. For example, while from a distance you might not be able to tell what’s silk and what’s cheap satin, up close (and on you), you’re going to immediately notice the stark difference.
