Running A Healthcare Business: What To Know When Kids Are Involved

3 October 2025 by mylifeyourway Leave a Comment

So, you’re running a business in the healthcare industry, which means your main focus is on delivering certain health-related services to people. This could involve general healthcare services, caregiving services, dental services, therapies and so on. While most of your patients or clients are adults, there could be times when you’re expected to interact with or treat children.

When this happens it opens a can of worms.

Dealing with kids is completely different from dealing with adults, particularly in the healthcare industry. Here are a few crucial things to know when kids are involved in your healthcare business.

You Must Have Clear Policies In Place

Working with children, or interacting with children in your place of work, will mean you must implement different childrens policies throughout your business. To give you some context as to what this means, different policies will cover things like:

  • The safeguarding and protection of children
  • Outlining when parents or guardians need to give consent
  • Explaining how a child’s health information is handled, stored and shared
  • Detailing staff responsibilities when dealing with children

All of these things are necessary for legal compliance. You can’t run a business in the healthcare industry without various children’s policies in place. It’s a way of protecting kids, yes, but it also protects your business from liability.

All Staff Members Must Have The Right Qualifications

Depending on what your healthcare business does, your staff members need to have all of the right qualifications for working with children. In the UK, this will normally involve one key thing:

  • An Enhanced DBS Check: Effectively, this is a criminal background check that looks to see if the individual has any previous misdemeanours. It’s a legal requirement for everyone to pass a DBS check in order to work with children. You can’t work with any child patients without one of these as you’ll end up in big trouble.

However, as a healthcare business, you may also need Paediatric First Aid training. This is a special type of First Aid training that focuses on treating children. It’s very advisable for all staff to get this qualification if you work with a lot of kids.

Your Workplace Needs To Be Child-Friendly

If you invite children to your workplace, then it must be suitable for them to be in. This means you can’t have clear safety hazards lying around - but you should also consider designing parts of it to be more kid-friendly.

You see this with dental businesses or general practices that have areas with kids' toys and games for them to play while waiting. It’s always wise to have things like this because it makes children feel more at ease while keeping them safe.

By all means, you can disregard this information if you implement a policy that explicitly says your healthcare business does not deal with children. However, the chances are yours will probably involve kids at some point. Whether it’s a parent bringing their child in or a child who needs care in the community. In any case, if you want your business to succeed, you need to initiate the ideas in this post to make your business legally compliant and child-friendly.
