The summer holidays can sometimes feel like a stretch of never ending time and sometimes I struggle for ideas to keep the children entertained and engaged. I want to make learning fun for them and so I have put together a list of stem summer activities for kids which I plan to work my way through over the course of the summer. Some of them I'm really excited to try out myself!
- Go on a bug hunt and research the different ones that you find.
- Use the NightSky app to find constellations on a clear night
- Create your own Rube Goldberg machine
- Dissect a flower and learn about the different parts of the plant
- Bake your favourite treat and measure the ingredients
- Build DIY instruments and have a sing-a-long
- Make an ant farm
- Take pictures and turn them into a memory matching game by printing copies
- Combine art with outside exploration by drawing local plants
- Practice origami
- Take some learning games to a local park and play
- Try to build the biggest block structure and watch gravity work when it falls
- Make oobleck (2 cups cornflower, 1 cup warm water or find a recipe online)
- Visit a nearby museum - this is the perfect stem summer activities for a rainy day.
- Create constellations using toothpicks and marshmallows
- See if you can spot any bugs on a hike
- Make smores and watch how the heat changes the ingredients. Use this as an opportunity to learn about how fires are made and fire safety.
- Learn about water ecosystems by going to a nearby lake or ocean
- Make ‘dancing raisins’ with clear sodas, raisins, glasses and water (for control)
- Have an egg drop competition (who can make a better egg parachute/protection)
- Create a fossil hunt in your backyard or a nearby park
- Run a lemonade stand and count the money, ingredients, etc.
- Plant fruits or vegetables in your garden and watch them grow
- Find out when a meteor shower is likely to occur and keep watch
- Practice your math skills with snack subtraction and addition
- Sketch and build a model of your house with blocks and other available crafting tools
- Head to a nearby zoo and study up on your favourite animals
- Eat some ice cream and learn about why it melts in the summer sun
- Build a lolly pop stick catapult and see who can launch a mini marshmallow the furthest
- Put food colouring and white flowers in different glasses of water and see how they change
- Buy some fun helium balloons and see how they deflate over time
