The Challenges of Excessive Information

10 June 2023 by mylifeyourway Leave a Comment

In today's world, information is abundant and easily accessible. As Louis Freeh once remarked, gathering intelligence information can feel like drinking water from a fire hydrant. While most individuals may not be involved in intelligence work, this analogy perfectly captures the experience of information overload – akin to trying to drink from a fire hydrant. In such a scenario, a significant portion of the information is bound to spill out and be missed. This article sheds light on the drawbacks associated with information overload.

Experiencing Excessive Stress

One of the primary symptoms of information overload is feeling overwhelmed and stressed. It's as if the brain is bombarded with an incessant flow of information, causing a sense of mental congestion. This overload often leads to forgetfulness, thereby exacerbating stress levels.

Lack of Confidence

When inundated with contradictory information, it becomes challenging for individuals to determine the right course of action. For instance, conflicting reports exist regarding the effects of spanking on children. How does one discern which information is accurate and make informed choices? The lack of confidence arising from information overload can lead to decision paralysis or self-doubt.

Inadequate Information Filtering

When an excessive amount of information is received, individuals may instinctively shut down. The usual filtering process, which categorises information into important and trivial, tends to falter. This improper filtering, known as "twigging," results in a generalised perception where all information appears equally significant or insignificant.

Difficulty Distinguishing Right from Wrong

With a deluge of information accompanied by seemingly factual studies, it becomes arduous to discern what is right or wrong. Consider the debate between a Paleo diet and a vegan diet for weight loss and health—numerous studies support both sides. How does one determine the truth? Is there a reliable way to ascertain the veracity of conflicting claims?

Confusion Surrounding Common Knowledge

When one is uncertain about the authenticity of information, including what is right or wrong, it leads to confusion regarding generally accepted truths about the world. Inability to discern accurate information hampers a person's understanding of commonly known facts.

Heightened Fear of Change

Inability to interpret incoming information often breeds fear of change. When confronted with an overload of information, characterised by black and white thinking, people naturally become apprehensive about change since its consequences remain unclear.

Taking on Excessive Responsibilities

Information overload can create the illusion of being capable of multitasking and handling more than one actually can. However, numerous studies have shown that humans are not designed for multitasking. To delve deeper into this topic, you can refer to a Forbes article titled "Multitasking Damages Your Brain and Career" by Travis Bradberry.

To combat information overload, there are strategies one can adopt. Limiting screen exposure and focusing on the task at hand can help regain control. Additionally, avoiding multitasking when absorbing important information allows for better comprehension and retention.
