How to Make Your Clothes More Sustainable

Even though we wear clothing for a short period of time before we throw it away, clothes are still among the most wasteful items in our lives. Could there be a more sustainable approach to clothing that can help reduce waste? How about using more environmentally friendly materials? Read on for some tips for affordable sustainable clothing.

Used clothes

Because they have already been worn by someone, used clothing can effectively solve problems and be sustainable if they are purchased from the right places. Charity shops are perfect for this since they are incredibly strict about what they sell and how they clean it before selling it.  In fact, manufacturing clothes takes plenty of resources from the environment, so buying used clothes reduces the impact on the environment.

Washing clothes

You can make your clothing care more sustainable by following these tips:

Wear your clothes as often as possible without washing them

Unlike the old days, modern materials don't require washing every time you wear them unless they have a stain or something specific that needs cleaning.

Try to line dry as much as possible

Electric dryers are power guzzlers and often don't produce the pleasantest smelling clothes.  Therefore, it is best to line dry your clothes so that the natural air can do the drying.  This is a great way to ensure you have affordable sustainable clothing. It's a good idea to use a little less detergent and rinse thoroughly before hanging the clothes to dry.

Don't dry clean

Clothes that are dry cleaned are more inefficient and environmentally damaging than clothes that are washed.  Dry cleaning is no longer necessary for most clothes so try to avoid it as much as possible and opt for clothes that don't need it whenever possible.

Consider using a spot treatment for any stains when they happen when dry cleaning only clothes. This way you will reduce the number of times you have to dry clean each item.  Sometimes, simply washing your hands with some liquid soap can do the trick, and you can let them air dry.

Choose washers that use less water

When looking for new washers, try to find ones that use the least amount of resources - either water or electricity.  Washing machines that take clothes in the front load position use less water and are gentler on your clothing - the fewer washes you do, the longer they will last.

Clothing materials

The material of the clothing is another aspect that you can consider.  Many materials are environmentally friendly while others are not.

The following are some ideas:

Look at hemp

Since hemp does not require pesticides to grow or chemicals to be processed into clothing, it is one of the most sustainable materials.  Among the environmentally friendly fabrics, it ranks high on many lists for being a highly renewable material.

Clothes produced ethically

Buying ethically produced clothing which is vegan, artisanal, locally-produced, or organic reduces pollution and avoids animal testing, are all examples of ethical clothing.  It is also common for these clothes to be well made and to last for a long time.

Find out more about cotton

Everywhere you look you see cotton, but not all cotton is the same.  Pay attention to the cotton's information and look for organic cotton that has avoided pesticides and chemicals during its production.

Conclusion

It is possible to be fashion conscious and sustainable at the same time. Choose clothing that is made of sustainable materials, wash them in a sustainable way, and even use second hand clothes.  While doing all this, you will still look your best.
