When it comes to life these days it seems we are never too far away from a screen. There are computers we might use for work or our kids use at school. There are phones and tablets, gaming devices, and even the TV. Screens are a huge part of our lives, but that doesn’t necessarily mean we have to always indulge in screen time. In fact, too much screen time can be damaging to our health, physically and mentally. So what can you do to reduce screen time? There are many different activities you and the kids can do that don’t involve a screen. Here are some screen free activities to give you a bit of inspiration.

Decluttering
One of the first things you can do is declutter. It is a great way to be productive with the time you have. There are many things you could declutter. You could start with your wardrobes and drawers and move on to other areas of your home. The kids can also get involved when it comes to decluttering their toys. Thinking about what they could donate or even selling some things to add to savings for things they do want.
Read a book
Books! Remember those? Avoiding a screen is a great opportunity to pick up a book and enjoy the simple task of reading it. Kids should read more than perhaps they are doing, so use this time for them to get their reading books out from school or find a book that you know will keep them interested. When was the last time you just sat and read something? Here are some recommendations of books I have been enjoying.
Get in the kitchen and cook or bake
Another great thing to think about is to get in the kitchen and cook or bake. It is a simple task, but it can often be a lovely way to enjoy some time doing something different. The kids will love the chance to spend time with you in the kitchen, and it could ignite a new passion in their lives. Or even encourage them to eat more or try new things. I also write a vegan food blog if you are looking for some ideas.
Arts and crafts
There is something about sitting down and enjoying arts and crafts that really helps to get the imagination and creativity going. Kids are usually obsessed with arts and crafts and love the chance to enjoy painting, colouring and making things. If you are stuck for ideas, Pinterest is a great place to get screen free activities ideas and you can also find crafts that are specific to the day or time of the year. Making things like birthday cards, things for Easter or even Christmas-themed crafts.
Board games
When was the last time that you sat down and played a board game? It can often be a lovely way to spend some time with the family and a great way to pass the time. It usually inspires conversation and also gives you the chance to think a little differently and discuss tactics or inspire some competitiveness amongst you all.
Puzzles
Puzzles are a great way to sit and relax and it can often be something that turns into a full family affair. Finding a puzzle and setting it up and all doing what you can to complete it. It is such a simple way to enjoy some time together but a great way to avoid the screens and do something different.
Gardening
When the weather is good gardening is one of the easiest ways to step away from the screen. If you haven’t usually been green-fingered before now is the time to give it a try. You could start by planting a few flowers or even trying your hand at growing your own herbs or vegetables. If you wanted to, you could also give a part of the garden to the children to enjoy choosing some seeds to plant and understanding what it takes to grow plants and watch them grow. Gardening can become a passion and it could soon take over. In a good way.
Make a den
This might be one for the kids, but a den is a great way to inspire some creativeness and imagination and is one of the most fun screen free activities. They could create a den in their bedrooms, in the living room to enjoy a movie later or even outside. It will keep them occupied for longer than you might think as they need to think about how to make it. It will also encourage problem-solving.
Try something new
Finally, why not try something new? Give yoga a try, learn to knit or even try sewing. Once you think about it, there are plenty of things you could try and use the time wisely for.
Hopefully, this has given you plenty of inspiration for screen free activities. If you found this post useful, share it with your friends and Pin it for later...
