How to Use Fallen Autumn Leaves in Home Décor

8 October 2025 by mylifeyourway Leave a Comment

As the days grow shorter and the air turns crisp, autumn paints pavements and parks with a glorious carpet of colour. Those fallen leaves aren’t just lovely outdoors—they can be transformed into simple, beautiful décor that brings the season’s warmth into your home.

A single green monstera leaf is displayed in a clear glass bottle on a wooden desk with books and papers in the background.

Create Stunning Centrepieces

One of the easiest ways to style with leaves is to make an eye-catching centrepiece.

Leaf-filled vases: Gather a mix of reds, golds and deep oranges. Layer them inside a clear glass vase—on their own or mixed with other foraged finds like acorns and pinecones. Pop it on the dining table, mantle or hallway console for instant autumnal charm.

Floating leaves with candlelight: Fill a shallow bowl with water, add a few colourful leaves and float a couple of tealights on the surface. The gentle glow bouncing off the leaves creates a calm, cosy atmosphere—perfect for an evening supper.

Craft Beautiful Wall Art

With a little patience, fallen leaves make striking art pieces.

Framed pressed leaves: Press leaves between the pages of a heavy book for a couple of weeks until flat and dry. Arrange them on good-quality paper or card, then frame. A trio of small frames in a hallway or above a sideboard looks especially elegant.

Leaf collage: Use different shapes and shades to create a pattern or silhouette (a heart, a wreath, a simple landscape). Glue onto canvas or sturdy card. This is a brilliant weekend project for children and adds a personal, seasonal touch to family spaces.

Enhance Cosy Spaces

Autumn is the season of cosy corners and quiet cuppas.

Autumn-scented accents: Instead of stuffing cushions (which can be noisy and fragile), tuck a small breathable sachet of dried, crinkle-resistant leaves with cinnamon sticks or cloves behind cushions or inside a basket to bring a gentle seasonal scent to living rooms.

Under-glass displays: Arrange a layer of leaves beneath a glass-topped coffee table, or create a simple tray display under a glass cloche. In entranceways, place leaves in a frame or shadow box rather than loose on the floor—prettier, safer, and easier to refresh.

Create Seasonal Wreaths and Garlands

Wreaths and garlands are classics for a reason—they’re simple, versatile and impactful.

Leaf wreath: Fix leaves to a circular base made from twigs, wire or sturdy cardboard. Go lush and full, or keep it minimal with a few sculptural leaves spaced out. Hang on the front door, over a mantle, or on an interior door for a warm welcome.

Leaf garlands: Thread leaves onto twine or thin wire (use a needle or tiny hole punch), then drape across fireplaces, shelves or window frames. For a longer-lasting garland, press and seal the leaves first (see tips below).

Table Styling Ideas

  • Place settings: Write guests’ names on larger leaves with a paint pen and place on folded napkins.
  • Runner alternative: Overlap leaves down the centre of the table for a natural runner; dot in mini pumpkins or pinecones.
  • Napkin rings: Wrap a length of twine around a napkin and tuck in a small leaf or two for a simple finish.

Kid-Friendly Crafts

  • Leaf rubbings: Place paper over a leaf (veins facing up) and gently rub with crayons to reveal the pattern.
  • Nature crowns: Tape or glue leaves to a strip of card measured to fit around a child’s head—perfect for an autumn walk photo.
  • Bookmarks: Press small leaves and laminate them (or seal with clear contact film) to make keepsake bookmarks.

Maintenance & Preservation Tips

  • Dry before use: Always dry or press leaves before crafting to prevent mould and premature decay. Spread them out on newspaper for a few days or press in heavy books for 1–2 weeks.
  • Seal for longevity: Once dry, lightly mist with a clear, matte craft sealant (front and back) to help preserve colour and reduce crumbling.
  • Avoid direct heat/sun: Keep arrangements away from radiators, stoves and strong sunlight to prevent curling and fading.
  • Refresh regularly: Swap out any leaves that start to dull or break. For displays you’ll keep up all season, prepare extras in advance.
  • Safety first: Keep loose leaves away from open flames; use battery tealights if children or pets are around.

Final Thoughts

Fallen leaves are one of autumn’s simplest pleasures. Whether you frame them, float them, or weave them into wreaths and garlands, these natural touches bring colour, texture and a sense of the season into every corner of your home—without spending a penny.
