Positive Ways To Use Tech To Strengthen Your Relationships

Screen time is increasing, and more and more of us are buying gadgets and gizmos for our homes, cars and offices. It’s easy to focus on the negatives when it comes to analysing the impact of spending hours online every day, especially when discussing the role technology plays in influencing children and teens, but there are advantages. In this article, we’ll outline some positive ways to use tech to strengthen your relationships with others.

Bridging physical distance

One of the main advantages of using technology to communicate with friends and family members is to bridge physical distance. In years gone by, you had to use a phone to make voice calls abroad or catch up with friends in other cities and counties, sometimes at great expense. Today, you can touch a button and within seconds, you’ll be able to see the person you’re calling and chat for hours without worrying about getting a huge bill. Video calling and instant messaging are quick and convenient ways to keep in touch and they offer so much more than a conventional phone call. Grandparents and parents can see their children and grandchildren while they’re talking to them and you can leave voice messages for other people and share photos and files. With a visual element, you’ll feel like you’re together, even if you’re hundreds or thousands of miles apart.

Enjoying quality time together

Finding the time to see friends and relatives can be difficult. If you work long hours, you have kids, or you’re juggling work with other commitments, you may find that your schedule is packed. When you do have time, it’s important to make the most of it. Spending quality time with loved ones doesn’t always mean meeting up in person. If you live a long way away from your family, or you struggle to find weekends that work to get your friendship group together, technology provides solutions. During the pandemic, many of us relied on tech to connect with others and enjoy quality time together. From virtual quizzes and watch together Netflix movie nights to Friday night drinks online and hosting kitchen discos by sharing playlists and inviting guests to your video chat, there are lots of ways to have fun and socialise without being in the same room. There are also multiple activities you can enjoy with others at home, including film nights and gaming.

Preventing isolation

Did you know that around a third of adults experienced loneliness in 2021? Being isolated can affect mental health and well-being in adults of all ages. Technology can play a vital role in bringing people together, enabling people to meet new friends and preventing loneliness and isolation. It also offers an alternative to face-to-face meetings or activities for those who might not feel confident enough to meet people in person and those who struggle to get out and about. Social contact can have a hugely positive impact on mental well-being and it can also boost confidence.

Connecting with colleagues

Working remotely offers an array of benefits for employees and freelancers, but there are downsides. A 2022 survey revealed that over 30% of remote workers said that being out of the office or a communal workplace made them feel more lonely. When you work from home, you spend most of your time alone rather than with colleagues and this can make it tough to maintain relationships.

Technology has changed the way we communicate, and it offers incredible opportunities for remote workers to interact with each other and people to form close relationships with their colleagues. Video calls are more engaging than phone calls and emails and there’s scope to introduce a social element to encourage bonding and collaboration outside of meetings and catch-ups. Teams can participate in quizzes and games or simply hang out and chat like they would at the water cooler at the office. Communication is key to establishing strong and positive working relationships. Spending time together virtually and having access to technology that enables us to communicate with each other quickly and easily also boosts morale and enhances well-being.

We often talk about the rise of technology as a negative when discussing its impact on our relationships. There are disadvantages, but there are lots of ways technology can strengthen the relationships we have with others and reduce the risk of loneliness and isolation. Tech can bring people together, make it easy to stay in touch with friends and family in different places and enable individuals to expand their social circles and engage in social activities no matter where they are.
