Tips for looking your best for a special occasion

When you are going to a wedding, a friend's birthday, a date or any special occasion for that matter, it’s nice to dress your best. Dressing your best brings out your inner confidence, helps you feel more positive and helps with first impressions - this is especially important if you are going to an event where you haven’t met the majority of people before, which can be nerve-racking.

While you can put on your best dress and pair of heels, there are so many other ways that you can look your best for your event. You can wear a fancy pair of earrings, a nice necklace, and dust out your designer handbag - inwang vintage has a great selection if you need a new one! Along with what you accessorise yourself with, the colours you wear can impact your appearance as well as the type of clothes you are wearing - check for a colour code before the event, some weddings for example will request that guests only wear black.

To help give you some inspiration for your event, we have put together our guide on looking your best for a special occasion. Hopefully, there are a few tips that you can apply when you are getting ready.

What colour suits you best?

Everybody has a colour that suits them best. You can research colours online that suit different skin complections or you can ask a shopping assistant at a fashion company. (It may be that you have to go shopping and try different colours on) It’s important you find the colour that suits you best as you can then update your wardrobe and feel more confident when getting ready. You’ll be amazed at how different you feel when looking in the mirror when wearing an outfit that compliments your appearance.

What clothing suits your age?

As you get older, so will the clothes that suit you - imagine a 16-year-old wearing a 70-year-old outfit or the other way round, it would look strange! Unfortunately, the truth is as you age, your style will age with you and you can no longer get away with wearing something that you did when you were 18. We aren’t saying to dress according to the stereotype, however, it’s important to research the trends for your age group and try those styles as they may suit you really nicely.

Accessories are important

It’s a fact, you can’t look your best if you are not wearing accessories! Accessories can take your look to the next level, they add another dynamic and help show your personality. Different accessories that you should consider wearing are bracelets, rings, earrings, necklaces, belts, hair clips and more. If you ever need some inspiration you can look on sites like Pinterest, TikTok or Instagram and see what the fashion influencers are wearing - if you like what they are wearing, they will often share where they got it from. You can also look for other fashion blogs like mine and read their article on accessorising your outfit - you will find there is plenty of information on the internet.

Simplicity can be key

Accessories are important and can make an outfit but too many people overcomplicate their look when getting ready for a special occasion, making them not look their best. Simplicity can be key, not overwearing layers and making sure the clothing you are wearing matches. Try to build a wardrobe of items that can be worn for many years and do not age. This way, in a few years time, they will still be fashionable, making you look your best.

Consider the fabrics you are wearing

Another tip that is very important is to consider the fabrics you are wearing. In today’s world, there are so many different fabrics that you can choose from - leather, silk, cotton, linen, velvet, satin, wool and more. Certain fabrics will go well with others but some simply do not work. For example, leather and silk can work when done correctly but can also clash. If you are trying to find the best pairing to silk, consider velvet. Tweed and twill complement each other and so do cashmere and silk. If you are unsure, Google is a great place to start for finding fabrics that complement each other.

Dress for the event you are attending

Don’t go against the fashion standards for the occasion you are attending as this can be a big no-no. What comes to mind first is a wedding, you do not wear white to a wedding and in some cases red is seen as a no-no. When planning your outfit, plan it to match the occasion and the standards set for the occasion. For example, if the occasion is smart-casual, you don’t go in your tracksuit. It’s very rare that you can overdress so our advice is to always go one above what the standard is being set. If you are ever unsure of what to wear, you can ring a friend or family member as their advice is normally correct.

Use colours to your advantage

Colours can play a big part in your overall appearance and how an outfit can come together. Don’t be afraid to play with colours and wear something that you would normally consider outside your comfort zone, such as a yellow dress. Colours can help boost the mood of those around you, present you as a possessive person and give the feeling of calm and happiness. If you aren’t sure of what colours to go for, think about your natural colours and try to match the colours with this.

Ensure your clothes fit correctly

So many people buy clothes that do not fit them correctly, which you should try and avoid if possible. When trying to look your best, wearing something that fits your body type correctly can make a huge difference in your appearance. If you have the time and budget, consider seeing a tailor as they will be able to adjust your clothes accordingly. For example, at a formal event, you don’t want your dress dragging on the floor and looking frumpy. A tailor will be able to correct the measurements for you.

Plan your outfit the night before

Nobody can wear their best outfit if they haven’t had the time to plan it. Just imagine waking up in the morning, having a shower and then leaving within the hour, there is no chance you will be able to look your best! Instead, the night before go through all your clothes, try them on and give yourself plenty of time to match your clothing items together, so that you are looking your best. Get out a nice set of earrings, a bag that matches your dress and a pair of shoes that are stylish but also comfortable enough to walk in - looking good doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your feet.

Organise your wardrobe

If you don’t know what items of clothing you own, how can you dress your best? When you talk to your friends and family members, a lot of them will say they don’t know all the clothing items they own, so you are not alone if you fall into this category. Give yourself a weekend day to go through your wardrobe and organise it. By organising it, you can start to get an idea of the different outfits you own and how they can match. Then you can keep them together, ready for your next special occasion. Tips for organising your wardrobe include: sorting your items by categories - tops, short sleeve dresses, long-sleeve dresses, knitwear, swimwear etc. Try to be strict and donate anything that you do not think you will wear in the future and access your storage system when organising. It may be that you need to buy another wardrobe or set of drawers to help keep your clothes together nicely.

There are so many tips that you can apply when trying to look your best for a special occasion. Our advice would be to use a few of our tips and see what difference it makes - it may mean you have to go on a shopping trip (the perfect excuse in our books). We guarantee looking your best will leave a great impression and we are sure you will get a few compliments along the way. And remember, when buying items, you don’t need to buy new. There are plenty of marketplaces out there where you can buy second-hand clothes that have barely been worn, helping you save money - in some cases, people have forgotten to return their item so it’s brand new, which is a bargain!

What special occasion do you have coming up and how are you going to look your best for it? Which of the above tips will you be trying when getting ready? Are there any tips that you would like to share that you think we should add to our guide? If we are missing anything,  Let us know in the comment box below, we would love to hear from you.
