Ways To Conserve Energy At Home (and Produce Your Own)

30 May 2022 by mylifeyourway Leave a Comment

Utility bills rank among the most expensive of our monthly expenses for most of us.  The cost isn't the only factor hurting the pocket, as there is lots of wasted electricity.  As such, we should look at ways to conserve energy at home and if we can also produce our own in order to live a more sustainable life and save money.

Conserving energy

The best way to cut utility costs is to conserve energy at home, waste less and cut back on the amount you spend on utilities.

Here are a few ideas you can start considering today.

Use natural lighting and air conditioning

A big ball of light in the sky called the sun provides the most light.  Natural light is the best way to light your home and it doesn't cost a thing. However, it might not always be available, depending on where you live.  Ideally, you want your home to be filled with natural light, so open the blinds, pull back those curtains, and let it all come in.  This will help keep the house warm in the winter.

Similarly, you should open the windows and let the air circulate in your house rather than using an air conditioner.  There is no cost associated with opening windows, and the air flow is less likely to contain any bugs that can accumulate in air conditioning units.

Turn off lights when leaving the room

During the winter, especially, it is unavoidable to use lights.  However, one of the ways you can conserve energy at home is by turning off lights when leaving a room.  They are saving energy, extending the bulb's life and reducing electrical safety risks from electrical circuits by not using power to light an empty room.  You can set up connected light bulbs with motion sensors so that they turn on when you leave the room if you are a fan of smart tech!

Switch to LED bulbs

There's a good reason why people are calling for people to switch to LED bulbs - well, a few of them, anyway.  LED bulbs, for starters, last a lot longer than conventional ones.  Although they cost more initially, they are a worthwhile investment in the long run.  Additionally, they use less energy:

Energy efficient appliances

Replace any appliance that uses electricity by taking the energy efficiency of the new one into consideration before purchasing.  Each item has a rating, with A being the highest. This includes kettles, fridges, washing machines, and dishwashers.

Use that capacity

Although it may be tempting to run a dishwasher half full or wash a half load in the washing machine, it is not a wise use of energy.  As a result, make sure you utilize every facility to its full potential, even if it means allowing some dirty dishes from lunch to remain in the dishwasher until dinnertime.  By doing so, you can make the greatest use of your electricity.

Check your home’s insulation

Poor insulation is among the leading causes of wasted energy.  Heating rises through the roof, disappearing and dissipating.  To improve the home's energy efficiency, it is therefore important to look at the thickness and quality of your insulation.

Producing your own power

In addition to creating your own power, you can also be sustainable by generating your own electricity.  Most homes can use a variety of renewable energy sources that can reduce utility bills and make a little money selling unused energy.

Solar thermal

The use of a solar panel can be used to heat water, and it can work with existing systems.  You will not need to power your boiler with gas or electricity to create hot water when the sun is shining.  It may be necessary to get a new tank to work with this kind of system, and you need a south-facing house.

Ways To Conserve Energy At Home

Photovoltaic

Solar panels generate electricity from the sun using another type.  Again, the panels are mounted on top of the roof, so a 90 degree angle is needed in the south direction.  There are ways to sell excess power back to utility companies if you have more than you need. However, it can be expensive to set up.

Wind turbines

In most cases, wind turbines are massive objects that sit in hilly fields or near the sea.  There are, however, smaller, home-size versions of these machines available, and they might be worth considering if you live in a suitable area.  With planning permission or local regulations, there may be restrictions on where you can put them. Be sure to check this first.

Heat pumps

A compressor creates heat from water, ground, or air, then transfers that heat to an electric pump with the help of the principles of refrigeration (vapour compression).  There is little maintenance involved, but the cost varies depending on where you get your power.  It is important to make sure your home is well insulated if you opt for this approach.

Conclusion

The majority of people will not be able to produce their own electricity at this point, but we can conserve it in order to make our homes more energy-efficient.  By saving on utility bills, it will also save us some money as well.
