While MacBooks have always been known for their stellar performance, they can always suffer from issues in time. These don’t develop out of the blue and are often because of a lack of maintenance and improper care. Thankfully, common MacBook problems tend to come up for everyone.

With how common they are, figuring out how to fix them doesn’t have to be difficult. There are more than a few guides and answers online to many of these. While many of these can have differing answers - such as why is my MacBook  Air fan so loud - some are quite easy to diagnose.

Fixing them shouldn’t be a problem, and you can even do it yourself. It’s worth diving into how you can fix the most common MacBook problems yourself.

Common MacBook Problems & How To Fix Them: 5 Top Options

1. Not Starting

Your MacBook not starting may be the most startling problem to come across, and you could think it needs to be replaced. That’s especially true if it’s fully-charged and there aren't any battery issues. You should hold down the power button for ten seconds to make sure it’s properly turned off.

After that, press the button again to try to turn it on normally. If it still doesn’t turn on after this, you may need to speak with a professional to get it fixed. Unfortunately, this is one of the times where you mightn’t be able to fix it yourself.

2. Not Charging

Charging your MacBook will be vital, but it’s not uncommon for the device to have some issues with this in time. The first thing to do if this happens is to check any connections to see if there’s a hardware issue. Dust in the adapter, faulty switches, and loose connections can all stop your MacBook from charging.

If this doesn’t solve the issue, then it’s worth opening up the Battery Health section in your settings. It’s possible there’ll be an issue with the battery itself, and you can find out whether this is the case here. The Battery Health section will tell you the specific problem and whether you should replace the battery.

3. Flickering Screen

A screen flickering issue is one of the most common MacBook problems to come across. With how much processing goes into the display, it’s easy to see why this is one of the most common issues to deal with. Thankfully, it’s also one of the easiest to fix. All you’ll need to do is:

  • Check for resetting PRAM/NVRAM
  • Updating the operating system
  • Using Safe Mode to pinpoint any specific issues

One or all of these steps could be enough to address the problem, so it’s worth going one-by-one until the problem’s resolved. It shouldn’t take much time to get through these.

4. Starting With A Blank Screen

MacBooks starting with a blank screen is a relatively common problem, and it’s also easily addressed. What exactly you need to do depends on which processor your MacBook has, however. For the Apple silicon processor, you’ll need to:

  • Hold down the power button for ten seconds
  • Click ‘Options’ on the resulting screen
  • Click ‘Continue,’ and follow the steps your computer suggests

With an Intel processor, the steps are relatively similar. After holding down the power button, however, you’ll then need to hold the Command (⌘)-R for several seconds until the Apple logo pops up. Proceed like above. Your MacBook should start normally after that.

You’ll be back to making money from home in no time.

5. Spinning Beach Ball

A spinning Beach Ball sign shows your MacBook was working on something, but this couldn’t be accomplished or finished. While it doesn’t come up regularly, it’s something you’ll need to take seriously. It’s a sign that something is affecting your MacBook’s overall performance.

Usually, it’s a sign something is slowing down your device. Thankfully, this is relatively easy to fix. You’ll simply need to:

  1. Opening the Activity Monitor and seeing what’s using up a lot of CPU.
  2. Closing anything that’s using more of the CPU than it should be.

After that, your MacBook should be able to finish any tasks it was struggling to get done.

Maintenance Tips To Prevent Common MacBook Problems

You shouldn’t wait until the most common MacBook problems come up to address them. Instead, it’s worth being proactive to make sure they don’t pop up. While that means putting a bit of time and effort into looking into your device, it can be worth it to avoid the stress and hassle of fixing anything.

Some top maintenance tips are more than recommended for this, such as:

  • Empty The Trash Regularly - Files still take up disk space when they’re in your Trash folder, and they’ll keep doing so until they’re deleted permanently. They could end up slowing down your computer in time. By emptying the trash regularly, you can make sure that doesn’t happen.
  • Scan For Malware - Malware can always be a risk with a computer, and you’ll need to be proactive in preventing it. Having specific software focused on stopping malware from infecting your MacBook, and it’s always worth having on on-hand to make sure you’re not at-risk.
  • Update Software - Software goes out-of-date faster than you’d think, which is why you’d often get notifications informing you of updates. You should install these as quickly as possible, as they make sure everything’s running as smoothly as possible. It’ll also keep your MacBook protected against malware.

Once you’ve spent some time and effort maintaining your MacBook, you shouldn’t have to worry about it developing any issues. You should avoid some of the most common MacBook problems, saving yourself some time and hassle. It’s worth spending the time being proactive about it.

Common MacBook Problems: Wrapping Up

Fixing the most common MacBook problems doesn’t have to be difficult, and you wouldn’t need to go to a professional to get it done. Instead, it’s a matter of putting a bit of time into doing some simple fixes.

Coupled with that is using a few maintenance tips to prevent these problems from coming up. With a little time and effort, your MacBook should be running perfectly and shouldn’t have any issues.
