How To Help Your Favourite Furniture Pieces Last Longer

Furniture is a big part of what helps your house truly feel like a home, and over the years, you are bound to find some favourite pieces. However, wear, tear, and age can play their part and at some point, every piece is going to stop being a viable option. What can you do to prevent this fate for your most beloved pieces and to keep them in the home for longer?

Give Them The Regular Care They Need

Treat your furniture like it’s an investment in your home, and give it the consistent maintenance it needs to maintain its value as a result. Prevent the accumulation of dust, dirt, and grime, whether it’s by dusting wooden pieces with a soft cloth or vacuuming over upholstered pieces. For leather, you need to apply a specific conditioner every few months to keep the material supple and hydrated so it doesn’t form cracks. Whatever material or type of furniture you have, do your research and find out what kind of regular maintenance it needs.

Offer Them Some Protection

Some of the wear and tear suffered by furniture can be prevented with the right measures. Perhaps the most pervasive and constant threat is that of the sun. UV rays can cause upholstery to fade, dry out leather, and even weaken wooden surfaces, so keep furniture away from direct sunlight or use curtains or blinds to mitigate the harm they can cause. You should also avoid placing your favourite pieces directly next to heat sources like radiators or fireplaces, as they can cause wood to warp and crack.

Repair Before You Retire

Even with the right prevention and maintenance, eventually, parts of your favourite furniture are going to be beyond their best days. However, you don’t have to think about replacing it at the first signs of wear. With the help of furniture repair specialists, you can make sure that they get the care they need, whether it’s buffing out scratches, replacing loose joints, or even reupholstering the piece entirely. Seeking repair services as soon as you notice an issue prevents further damage and extends the life of your furniture. The more proactive you are, the less expensive repairs are likely to be.

Consider Upcycling Them

If your furniture doesn’t match your style anymore or has sustained wear, but you don’t want to repair it as it is, then you could find a creative way to give it new life instead. Upcycling your furniture, such as by giving it a fresh coat of paint, new upholstery, or repurposing an old piece into something entirely different can breathe new life into your furniture. For example, an old wooden dresser can be transformed into a kitchen island, or a vintage door can be turned into a stylish headboard.

The furniture in our homes plays a role not just in our home’s identity but our everyday lives. If you find a piece that you really love, then it can be worth fighting for. The tips above can help you do just that.
