What Is Low Impact Living?

7 June 2023 by mylifeyourway Leave a Comment

Ever wondered about the concept of low impact living? It may initially sound like a lifestyle devoid of movement, but that's not quite accurate. Low impact living actually refers to the level of environmental impact one has in their daily life. Although that's the fundamental definition, it encompasses much more. Let's delve into what it truly means to adopt a low impact lifestyle.

Achieving Low Impact Living

Embracing a low impact lifestyle requires careful planning in today's disposable world, where the urge to constantly purchase new items is prevalent. Nowadays, products are designed with limited longevity or become obsolete shortly after purchase. Nevertheless, it is possible to minimize our impact on the planet. Here are some steps to follow.

Invest wisely

Consider investing in reusable alternatives such as cloth grocery bags, cloth produce bags, a reusable water bottle or coffee mug, and transportation options like a bus pass or a bicycle. While there may be an initial cost for these items, many grocery stores provide refunds for each bag you bring, allowing you to recoup the expense within a few shopping trips.

Be prepared

Keep cloth grocery bags and an extra water bottle or coffee mug in your car at all times. This way, you'll always be ready for unexpected trips to the grocery store and won't have to rely on plastic bags provided by the store.

Cook from scratch

Making your own sauces and meals produces less waste, thereby reducing your environmental impact.

Embrace minimalism

Purchase only the clothing you need until the next wash cycle. Stick to planned shopping trips and resist impulse purchases. Additionally, making your own clothes and repairing them instead of discarding them further lowers your environmental impact.

Opt for used items

Thrift stores are excellent sources for gently used items that fulfill your household needs. When faced with a broken refrigerator, consider purchasing a used one rather than a new model. Older appliances are often easier to repair, saving you money in the process.

Recycle and compost

Don't discard items that are no longer useful to you. Someone else may find value in them. For instance, a broken refrigerator could serve as a source of spare parts for a refrigerator repair professional. Look for opportunities to pass on such items.

Embrace the 4 R's

Refuse, reduce, reuse, and recycle whenever possible. Adopting this mindset in your daily life will lead to a low impact lifestyle.

Contrary to common belief, low impact living does not require sacrificing luxuries and comforts. It is entirely possible to lead a fulfilling life while minimizing your ecological footprint. Give low impact living a try and discover how easily achievable and sustainable it can be.
